A pilgrimage site about 12km north of Šiauliai in Northern Lithuania, It is believed to have been placed on the former Jurgaičiai – Domantai hill fortress, and is covered with more than 250,000 crosses, crucifixes, effigies, statues of saints and patriots.

11:30 – 12:30Lunch time

Lunch at the local restaurant.

14:00 – 15:15Narrow Gauge Railway Museum & Stone Painting exposition

The Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum is the first object visited in small Anyksciai town. The museum was established in the century-old complex of Anyksciai Railway Station and exhibits Skoda locomotive Kukushka, other narrow gauge rolling stocks and communication tools. Inside the Station there is the waiting hall and the office of the Chief of the Train Station of the Inter-War period in Lithuania. Visitors can try out some of the operating exhibits – the handcar and the railway tricycle.
Later on visiting the permanent exhibition of stone paintings of the folk artist Stanislovas Petraska (1935-2009). To perpetuate landscapes of his homeland and Lithuanian national symbols, the painter used the unique technique of painting with stone dust, characteristic only to this artist.

15:30 – 16:30 Ethnographic Horse Museum

The Horse Museum exhibits not only the agricultural tools and means of transport of the days of horses, but also unique exhibits of philately, warfare and wood carvings. The museum presents various crafts; the visitors can observe the work of a weaver, ceramicist and bread baker, also a blacksmith, jeweller and a wood carver.

16:30 – 17:30Anykščiai Church and The Treetop Walking Patch

The century-old neogothic red brick church with twin spires, designed by the architect Nikolay Andrejev, is the highest church in Lithuania with its 79-metre-high spires being the first detail the visitors coming to Anykščiai can see.
After that the Treetops walking path, located in the famous Anyksciai Pinewood is the only treetop path in Eastern Europe. The path is in the level of the tree crowns and it lasts for 300 meters, evenly going up to 21 meters high.

The Power of Faith
Having an opportunity to visit the Homeland of my ancestors was a truly extraordinary experience. Our tour guide, Andrius took the stories of my childhood and turned them into memorable experiences. He brought us to a traditional farmhouse where we had a chance to go inside an see how my family lived. We were at the train station on the anniversary of the deportation of 300,000 Lithuanians to Siberia and experienced school children learning the history of the horror Lithuanians endured. We had an opportunity to see artifacts depicting daily living interpreted by two different artists. We had a spectacular traditional Lithuanian lunch consisting of cepelinai and cold beet soup. Andruis was so well versed in Lithuanian history, culture and charming stories. In particular he shared the stories of survival and deep faith as we arrived at the “Hill of Crosses”. I knew the stories of my family’s survival… this holy ground demonstrated how a nation and faith filled people could not be destroyed. I am deeply indebted to Andrius for being an engaging storyteller and an integral part of our Lithuanian journey.

A great daytrip with a good mix of activities and sites to visit.
This is a great tour to do if you only have limited time yet want to see a bit of everything – from the Hill of Crosses to the canopy tree walk, and culture and history visiting the horse, ethnography and train museums. Our guide Inge was fantastic and imparted a lot of knowledge during the daytrip.
